The politician from South Rift which is part of the land where people drink ‘mursik’ daily seems to have permanently parted ways with his kinsman and political nemesis turn acquittance, deputy president William Ruto, and is now fully grounded in the National Super Alliance (NASA).
It did not come as a surprise when the Bomet County Governor Isaac Ruto declared that he had joined the National Super Alliance(NASA) that is currently headed by the opposition bigwigs Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula. The South Rift political kingpin seems to have striken a working formula with the opposition that will see his party, Chama Cha Mashinani, lead the Kipsigis community in to a political battle against the Jubilee government whose top brass are President Uhuru Kenyatta and the son of the North Rift William Samoei Kipchirchir arap Ruto.
“As CCM we are now supporting NASA and as a party leader, I am becoming the fifth principal and will fight for space and negotiate within the coalition summit,” said Ruto, alluding to his inclusion in a power- sharing agreement with NASA leaders Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetang’ula and Musalia Mudavadi.
Ruto made the announcement after a closed- door meeting with elders, former councillors and professionals in Bomet town. Kipsigis elders led by Myoot Bomet County Chairman Milgo arap Barta and Kipsigis Clans Association chairman Edwin Kimetto endorsed the move.
“As elders we now back the negotiations and ask Governor Ruto to speak on behalf of the Kipsigis community within NASA,” Mr Kimetto said.
In what seems to be a way of parting with the deputy president William Ruto, governor Isaac Ruto declared that there isn’t anything that can bridge the gap between him and William Ruto.He said that they had ideologically different with the deputy president and that there is no possibility of them working together now and in the future.
“Working with the DP is not feasible in this year’s election. I am not so sure if that will be feasible even in the near future,” Ruto said.
The county chief claimed the DP had surrounded himself with sycophants, reduced MPs to cheerleaders and undermined elected leaders across the country. In addition, he had earlier claimed that DP’s best friend would be Yoweri Museveni of Uganda because they have the same styles of leadership.
“The DP and I are completely different in terms of ideological beliefs, how we run our affairs as a people and we have got divergent views on structure of government. His style of leadership does not appeal to many of us who are open-minded,” Ruto said.
He also said that while he was for the opinion that resources be devolved, the DP had struggled for all the resources to be retained at the national level. This too was another differing factor, according to him.
Finally, he said while NASA had opened doors to a coalition arrangement, Jubilee was adamant that CCM must dissolve ahead of the next general election.
“There is no way I am going to demolish my house (CCM) and move into another man’s house (Jubilee) with my children and grand- children in tow. It is only an insane person who can do that,” Ruto declared.
